Rözske, Hungary. A family of refugees rush to scale a fence running alongside the M5 highway near Rözske in a desperate attempt to evade Hungarian police after crossing the border from Serbia. The country has now sealed its border and any refugees caught coming through "illegally" will face up to three years in prison. Tovarnik, Croatia. 09.18.2015. A family waits at the Tovarnik train station on the Croatian side of the Croatian/Serbian border. Thousands of refugees have made their way to Tovarnik hoping to find a pathway to Western Europe after Hungary closed its border 4 days ago. Authorities are completely overwhelmed... Tensions are rising in sweltering heat amongst the already exhausted refugees whose uncertainty only adds to their difficult circumstance. Near Röszke, Hungary. 08.09.2015. Major standoff between a group of approx 200 refugees and the same number of police who cut them off on the railroad tracks approx 5 km from Röszke. The group streamed out of a processing camp at the border with Serbia, trying to avoid being fingerprinted and registered as they fear that will mean they must settle in Hungary. They are intent on walking to Germany, over 1100km away. It must be said that the Hungarian police are being very well behaved. One just offered me a bottle of water in fact. This 11-year old girl was one of the only survivor of her school bombing in Homs. Her parents decided to leave Syria right after the bombing. Crossing Hungary was a very traumatic experience for her, she says that it was "The worst experience in her life". Her mum explained that in Hungary, people were beaten up, robbed, they had to seat under the sun for hours without moving. Everybody was very nervous that it would be the end of the trip. They are now in Berlin, waiting to register. 3 months after their registration, the children will be able to attend school. We will post archive material as well as contemporary work to show that this is not a new crisis which should come as no surprise to our political leaders who had previously turned a blind eye to what was unfolding before them. The current crisis is the consequence of wars started by the West that were never concluded and its failure to deal with an ever growing list of failed states. The old division between economic migrant and refugee no longer exists. How is a country supposed to differentiate between an individual running from persecution and destruction and someone seeking a better life?

My agency @panospictures are currently dedicating their feed to highlight the current refugee crisis, posting old and new work from the archive. Including this image from my ongoing project about Syrian refugees 'Seeking Shelter'. Mohammed (22) was injured in March 2013 when his family home in Qousyr, Syria was hit by government shelling. His uncle was killed and many of his family were injured in the same incident. He was living as a refugee with his wife and young child in Tripoli, Lebanon but was awaiting resettlement in Scandinavia - August 2014. Iraqi refugee Hisyar shaves at the port in Mitilini while he waits to board a ferry which will take him on to Athens. There are far less people hold up in the capital of Lesbos now after the authorities with the help of UNHCR have managed to speed up the registration process. #Refugees who just crossed into #Hungary stopped by police who won't say where they're going to take them. The refugees were trying to evade police and walk to a nearby train station to get to #Austria. One set of police was shouting "camp", "registration," while an officer promised they would be driven to the border. Hungary doesn't want them, refugees don't want to stay, Austria/Germany will take them, hard to see why this is so complicated.
